- Clothes Make the Man -

By John Herlihy

Some people wear their clothing as though not their own;

The suit wears the man as though hand-me-downs sewn.

Some people wear their clothes like a close-fitting glove;

Everything folded in its place like the feathers of a dove.

The astute person will take note of his outfit and can tell

That the way he wears his clothing makes him feel well.

Crisp shirt, stiff collar, stylish tie all suggest a man on fire;

As he awakens in the morning, he is thinking of his attire.

Even as a child, he laid out tomorrow’s garb without haste,

As vestments of the priest laid out in the vestibule in place.

Cooling slacks of summer wool stately drape his lanky legs;

At the end of day, he hangs his garments on golden pegs.

Why even his accoutrements are awarded the utmost care;

Always the attention to detail that decides what he will wear.

A silver tie-clip fastens a wayward tie or does he wear gold;

The final picture relates a story that never before was told.

Known in harsh winter to don a woolen scarf round his neck;

No excuse, even in winter, to go about looking like a wreck.

Whoever said clothes make the man spoke something true ;

Whether milling about in a crowd or just waiting in a queue.

When standing naked, I don’t add up to one complete sum;

When fully dressed, I feel to be the person I always become.

FOR SOME THIS IS TRUE, FOR OTHERS IT IS NOT. I ONCE KNEW A GUY WHO WORE HIS WORK UNIFORM...EVERYWHERE, EVEN TO CHURCH. ALWAYS FRESH AND CLEAN AND IRONED WELL...WAS HIS UNIFORM. IN ANY CASE...TO EACH HIS OWN AND I CERTAINLY ENJOYED THIS FINE SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Clothes give the first impression, together with haircut and facial hair or not. It is a deciding factor for people to give you respect or not, to love you or to hate you, or to fear you. That's why it's so difficult if I change my look, which I now and then do, and then people think you're a different kind of person. God help us, I judge by it myself too.

While I have worked in settings where certain clothing requirements were expected, I never tried to "dress up" to an expectation, and therefore, probably missed some opportunity by those who view people superficially rather than genuinely for what they are worth. So I tend to agree with K2. But your poem does have a ring of truth, especially among those who feel disenfranchised unless they "play the part," on "all the world's a stage.

Sorry, John, but I must disagree. Clothes are an artifice and affectation, an external symbolic armor that often hides and compensates for the true identity and personality of the wearer. I do not believe in dressing for others (power, status, prestige, what have you). I believe in dressing for comfort and utility. I say that fully aware of the fact that 'civilisation' requires, nay, demands that we slavishly adhere to certain sartorial requirements in order to be 'taken seriously' by those most able to share power, recognition, status and wealth with us situated lower down on the economic food chain. I personally despise this attitude, so I shall put on my drab (but highly comfortable) mufti and go back out to sit in my cave on the hillside to contemplate Quantum Entanglements without my gold Rolex, my Ermenegildo Zegna Bespoke suit and my Berluti Alessandro Demesure leather oxford shoes. As for the poem itself, although your meter is off (as usual), your content is certainly creative and stimulating. Kudos!

My hat's off to you on this write. I remember a scene from the The Fly remake where he opens up his closet, and every piece of clothing is the same.That comes pretty close to describing my wardrobe. What I wear today, I'll wear again the day after tomorrow. Who needs to spend time picking out an outfit. My wife, on the other hand, can change outfits two or three times before deciding on what she'll wear on that day.

lol, I love shopping for hubby and going into men shops, Though he says he has enough clothes, I like to buy him new shirts, cuz it makes me happy to see him in them. Yes clothes is important. I have a mom who when she was alive would dress up in sequence dress to go to my sister's house. It took a week to vacuum the sequence off her couch, we both laughed so hard, We knew our mom, glamour always came first in her world, I miss her more then words can ever express. What I wouldn't give to see her on my couch, glitter and all. Love to you dear man, keep dressing up, it works !!!
