-- A Modern Day Plague --

John Herlihy

The plague and the lockdown bring us into the present;

We wish going into the future be as going into the past.

Moments now seem out of time and places out of place,

Creating fearsome circumstances we must suddenly face.

A strange unearthly twilight that settles before a storm,

The aurora borealis in the night sky to create a false dawn.

Time no longer binds me, therefore, I no longer feel bound;

The present has an endless quality that feels rooted in ground.

In apprehension, every glance loaded with charged meaning;

In fear and sorrow, the sun shines, but is no longer gleaming.

The earth still turns on its axis, but seems as if slowed down,

Never having experienced this before feels new and profound.

We will get through this, we will, just as sure as the earth turns;

We will be better for it, more circumspect, as the heart yearns.

I AGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY, MY FRIEND. I DON'T CARE HOW 'MODERN' THE PLAGUE MAY BE...OUR ETERNAL, ANCIENT GOD, WHO NEVER CHANGES STILL HAS TIME AND EVERYTHING ELSE UNDER CONTROL. AND WE REMEMBER...THERE IS A 'TIME' FOR EVERYTHING. THANK YOU FOR THIS INSPIRING WORK. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Like Pearl Harbor, the JFK assassination, 9/11, it seems like we are often caught off guard by the inability to predict what will befall us. But your poem is quite good at describing both the government and the people's inability to quite grasp what was going on and probably making rash but wrong decisions about things. These will be second-guessed and 2020 hindsight reviewed for a very long time.

But you are right about getting through it like we always do. I like the way Obama put it… "We can absorb a threat greater than 9/11." And this may well be that threat. The fact that animals can catch the disease from us, is entirely new territory.

No matter how catastrophic the worlds plight is, we still kiss and say goodnight. Lets fight the good

You've captured the times well, right down to the assurance that we will get through this, because I believe we will. In the meanwhile, we are undergoing a reality check. We're being forced into a better understanding of who and what we are as an individual as well where we fit in the sense of our humanity. We're learning things like what's truly important to us and, perhaps, we're becoming better judges of character in the process. And finally, as Nature reasserts herself, we should be reconsidering just how important we truly are to the earth. Obviously we're not that important, except in our ability to destroy. Still, in the end, Nature has the final word. Life will find a way, but so will death, as she so desires.
