-- Sacred Lullaby --
John Herlihy
Sing to me the lullaby that I need to hear,
A soothing serenade with its lilting sound.
A melody made pure by emotions of a tear,
Echoing of ancient times of truths profound.
The soft lullaby a mother to her child sings,
Evocative of all the tenderness in one’s child.
Its beguiling mystery into slumberland brings,
Whispering of other worlds endearing and mild.
What the child hears, an enduring, eternal tone,
Of twinkling stars, puff clouds, murmurs of rain.
Of sweet contentment on the wings of birds flown,
Riding of gentle breezes across the solitary plain.
Pine trees whisper tender secrets in their lullabies,
The hummingbird’s feathered wings drum soft.
Distant loons soothe infant souls with their cries,
Voices of angels return one last time from aloft.
The lullaby of the lover hovering over the loved one,
Soft breath of melody finds passage into eager ears.
Love’s enchantment from light of golden flax spun,
Its loving emotion gathering strength over the years.
The lullaby I now sing is not intended for sleeping,
The lullaby I now sing intended to keep me awake.
A sacred serenade ever searching, ever seeking,
With rhythms as oceanic waves that never break.
The lullaby I now sing meant solely for the Beloved,
One who consoles the one needing to be consoled.
Loving feelings sent forth returned as feeling loved,
A sacred lullaby that through the ages is forever told.

Makes me want to write a lullaby for my next poem. I hope I'm up to it.
