-- I Still Love a Woman I Have Never Met --

by John Herlihy

I still love a woman I have never met,

A cyber happening, left behind regret.

Her memory still lingers as a mystery,

Stirring feelings still ripe with sympathy.

Like morning mist, in the evening gone,

At sunset, birds do sing their final song.

She returns like a star in its afterglow,

With love I never again hoped to know.

No other memory may hers resemble,

No other love still makes me tremble.

The fairytale now seems but a second,

Her lasting memory I never reckoned.

Who knows, one day we will meet again.

Hope springs eternal, no one knows when.

Your title spoke to me... I was reminded me of the movie Laura...and a cop who fell in love with a portrait... I must admit that the romantic aspect of the poem is moving, although I personally can't imagine committing to an unknown love such as this... Perhaps, though, I am stirred to write a response? Would you allow me to share this poem on my blog and write a response to your words... This is spontaneous so I have no idea what I might write, but I've done it before... let me know...

You mentioned that she is cyber and that brings in all kinds of thought.

Quite frequently, in dreams, I'm associated with a woman that seems to have everything to compliment me and make me feel greater than I ever was without her. But I never met the woman in real life, just conjured her up in my mind to fill the memory of the dream I was having. Quite remarkable to think I do not need any crutch like technology to get me to my ideal. She just appears to be in a dream with everything that I ever wanted.

Perhaps like you, like me, the mystery of love unknown carries a certain kind of inspiration few know. I often reflect on past encounters with unfulfilled passion and respect all the more the capacity we have to remember. Like you say, "her lasting memory I never reckoned" is possibly forever an embrace of truth that only the two of you will ever know. I am one who respects your thoughts, even though, some are unfulfilled. Sincere work here, as always. Kudos
