Memory of a life past.

Poem Artwork

I am longing for the spring and panting like a thirsty deer
too many days have past since I last felt the sun
beneath anemic skies my body shivers in the clear
I have not become immune to the cold that winter spun
so angling for heat I turn my collar to the wind and shun
the whipped willow tree with her gentle arching ways
her generous weeping branches frozen in mid air
a healthy thrill of scissor skates, a Christmas winter maze
perhaps I used to once but now I am bereft of Bartlett pears
and my sciatic pain has grown beyond compare
Craving for a slice of heat or a warm wet pool of water
I hanker like a hungry squirrel looking for a nut
hibernate of night nocturnally tucked away diurnal as the otter
perhaps I'm just an old woman falling in a rut
wearing double swim suits while being pegged a hoarder
I'm longing for the blossoms of yesterday's sweet garden
for the roses my father grew inside the lattice square
back in the days when I used to wear Elizabeth Arden
my braids were long and brown instead of barely there
wish it were spring instead of winter, wish I could eat a pear.

"Sciatic pain" is awful, and very challenging. Have had quite a few of my own challenges of late as well. Hoarding? We keep all our pantries and shelves stocked too. Honestly.... it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Especially with what we see escalating in the world now. I enjoyed the honesty and imagery in this. Blessings.... r

I completely LOVE this gracious, intricate tapestry, bright work of sensations, a mural smorgasbord of combinations: ‘scissor skates,’ ‘slice of heat,’ ‘’winter maze,’ ‘anemic skies’ ‘whipped willow tree.’ Warrants at least two read-throughs. And the flourish at the end with: “…wish I could eat a pear.” Exquisite. Marvelous style with those long lines. Enjoyed this very much. ~~ djl

I JUST ATE ONE LAST NIGHT, MY LAST ONE...I WAS HOLDING ON TO IT. FRUITS AND CERTAIN VEGETABLES CAN GET SPARSE AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR...AND THIS ALONG WITH THE WHEATHER CAN MAKE US PANT FOR A CHANGE OF THE SEASON FOR MANY REASONS. BUT SUMMER IS ON THE HORIZON AND ITS SISTER SPRING WILL BE LEADING THE WAY...AS IT READIES TO RETURN WITH ALL ITS LUSCIOUS GIFTS. AS YOU KNOW, I LIVE IN THE SOUTH WHERE WINTER AIN'T TOO BAD, SO I HAVEN'T MISSED TOO MUCH, JUST PEACHES(SMILE). THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

As we all age, winter becomes harder to bear. Your poem does that in spades! Fortunately, in my neck of the woods, thanks to the food supply chain, I can get a pear, on discount because it is in season, from almost anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, the pandemic is holding up some of those supply chains and fruit is rotting in the transport containers.

It would help if you put some lines between your dense lines of poetic phrases.

You get plenty of winter when you live in the northern climes. As for me, I enjoy the cool winter breezes in the Florida sun, although today it is stormy and cloudy, which I also like. Lovely poem. The pear really is the most underrated fruit.

Although we still appreciate the beauty of all seasons as we age we appreciate the warmth of summer and such awesome treasures as fresh from the tree fruit.
