First Snows

Feeling the icy winds from the East

As we look forward to our Christmas feast

With only a few days left to go

We get the cold and it begins to snow

I go for a walk next morning in the sunlight

In the frosty snow so crisp and bright

As the sun reflects off the ice

I enjoy the scenery which is so nice

I get out my camera to take some photos

And feel the numbness of cold in my toes

With a crunch of ice below my feet

I pity the sheep nearby as they bleat

My mother’s dog sniffles with her nose in the air

For scents of other animals that had been there

She picks up a scent and runs to a gate

Where there’s another dog she has found a mate

He waggles his tail, a fine looking brute,

A golden retriever they call ‘Canute’

Showing off and rolling in the snow

But soon shows sorrow as we have to go

In from the cold, with a warm drink,

To clear my mind and make me think.

Is it logical to walk in the cold?

Or am I just getting too damned old?
