Young and stupid, back when drinking and driving was the norm, even when stopped by a cop, all they would search the car for would be drugs, booze was the least of their worries...e

Poem Artwork

In ‘72’ the drinking law did change,

So that alcohol could be consumed by the 18 & above range,

We all drank before then anyway,

But this did our resolve cement,

Personally though in my head I was still a child,

And booze did make me even more & legally wild,

An alcoholic I did become, drinking & driving part of my style,

Nothing done by me was anywhere near mild…

Afterall, I was 18 & would live forever,

Drinking & drugs made me think caught I would be never,

To outwit the cops and my dad, made me feel most clever...

A wrecked car, tickets & other accidents never made me change,

All us guys of that era were the same, none thought me in anyway strange…

It was a part of growing up... But too many died.

Those were the days alright. That law didn't stay on the books too long for the very reasons you describe. I lucked out and never harmed anyone or myself. Drinking orange juice, vodka and green creme de menthe, on the beach...an evil concoction we called "frog snot". Patrick

Perhaps some of us were lucky, we were soldiers fighting wars, no time for bars, drinking and driving afterwards. Although, some went down the drugs chute. Lucking back, WWII and Korea seems kind of an innocent age.
Then...it came Nam.

You are quite right, in fact I remember our routine for Saturday quite well...
work on our rods in the morning while drinking beer, hit the liquor store on way to tavern to load up for night, spend entire afternoon in tavern at a jam session of local band drinking quart after quart of beer (no wimpy pints back then no sir), grab a bite at local drive in, then race cars while drinking more beer, then off to the beach with the girls to really start drinking....wow how did we live through it, but then again...many did not!

You were a normal kid Ed, as long as we learn as we get older. I have to admit I never tried drugs because I had a way of getting off on life alone.

I did lots of stupid and foolish things when I was young. I can't imagine what I would've been like if booze and drugs were thrown into the mix! Thanks for writing Ed.

Peace,
Dayvid

River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood by David Thompson

For a time, I perched myself on a flat rock, comparing my life with the Guyandotte River. Just as its tributaries replenish it daily, changing it in some small—sometimes great—degree, so have the day-to-day occurrences of life changed me. Like the ri
