A following sea we have this horrendous night,
The book says to turn round and face the sea with our bow,
She won’t answer the helm & I fear we’ve lost the rudder,
The waves as big as or bigger than I’ve ever seen,
We are in for, to stay alive, a terrible fight…
All sails are torn away,
The sea I’ve served all my life,
Is taking us where she will,
We are at her mercy,
The rain and wind cut us like a knife,
What’s left of the crew & I huddle and pray,
We pray to see at least another day…
A hundred knot wind & the barometer still does fall,
She’s taken about the worst of it & we’ve done our all,
My ship is coming apart at her seams,
To go into the sea this night means certain death…
Thinking about those crew members on that cargo ship El Faro caught up in Joaquain last week. And they had all the modern devices to keep them away from and safe from the storm.
As a seafarer yourself, you have imagined well those of an earlier era with only their knowledge of the sea and their willingness to go out into it to save them from storms that came out of calm and sent them to the bottom of the sea.
Living close to the sea as you do, you have an affinity with it and its moods no doubt. My ancestors were sailors from France who came to the Grand Banks to fish for cod. Many of them perished in storms. Totally unrelated to this, I invite you to read my comment on George's last poem. I am quite sure it will sense to you as I've read your comment on his. Love and peace,
A poem that portrays well what some might be experiencing tonight off the coast. You bring to mind "The Edmund Fitzgerald", which is one of my favorite songs by Gordon Lightfoot.
Thanks, Ed! And get that parrot off your shoulder!
I haven't been at sea in hundred-miles-an-hour winds, but I have been out there in hurricanes a few times rescuing people from drilling rigs and oil platforms. It isn't a good place to be, that's for sure.
