Poem Artwork

A Nasa image of comet ISON nearing the Sun

A one time visitor came whipping around

Whipping around on a wild ride

The comet, a fossil of early times

Five and a half million years ago

The gigantic Oort cloud sphere of rocks

Around the Solar system stands so large

A slight shake and a nudge here and there

The rock pieces  pulled out of its zone

 Tumbled into the inner home

And went wayward on a free fall

With a wide lump of ice  now on the rock

This icy debris  dancing drunk  hurrying

Like Icarus it sought to touch the Sun

The fiery tryst as it grazed

Will leave it roasted and frying

If it survives on luck by chance,

Soon get brighter and can go flying

A hyperbolic gallop around the Sun just one time

The sun  got sucking  its snowball ice

Once there came a chance to see the magical comet

In the night sky of  Christmas season

Reminding how the three wise men

Patiently waited to see what a  star  revealed

When a wandering star  soon stood still to see

  Shining at a height

Silent on a cold December  night

When Jesus our saviour was born

 Of the lovely Virgin Mary

 In a  manger in Bethlehem

The story of two thousand years and more

Now the year old Comet ISON ( Eye'-shan) is dead

Broken by the wear and tear it endured

Young t'was to handle the might of the Sun

In our memories it will  forever be

A twinkling   wandering  star in the sky

Love how you wrote about the Comet Ison. I really wanted to see it. But did not look up where the best time and viewing areas were. I thought they stated that it did not get destroyed like they thought might happen. It survived. I just love how you wrote about it. wonderful poem and awesome picture.

Yes it seems to have gotten its backside singed as it went
on the backside of the sun. But it's still intact.

I hope to see it sometime soon myself J. Hopefully there will enough left after the sun has finished sucking some of its snowball ice. I remember another comet that was easy to see in December several years ago. Of course some of the everpresent nuts had to kill themselves because they thought it was a spaceship just for them. Bob

Yes, comets are one of the special parts of the solar system that leave us in awe of how things work. There are many theories about the star that appeared when Jesus was born. I won't comment on that because I'm not really an astronomer or an expert on those theories.

Enlightening and informative poetry.

I've been following the Comet ISON's trajectory for the past few days. It seems it has survived it nearness to the sun, surprising the scientists.
