capable of quirky awakening dream
wishing had a time machine
return to an elusive one-true -love-belief
and look at the illusion...before overseen
at the first stroke of a mid-night chime
find myself catapulted back
to the past lapse of awaiting retro-night
it would be 1998 Valentine's fickle whim
perhaps an even earlier fancy kind
of love-seeking romantic hope
that wipes out the sense of time
escapes logic and all that seems
less than a rich in puissant merits
whimsical quest...shifting all reality scenes
involving characters previously
undreamed of
a pink rose flower scented with dew
wears a heart on a giddy sleeve
in lavish gesture of love
hiding behind a reticent spell
a fragile leaf of a promise
on Valentine's night feels
incline to cheer and trust
a frog turns a handsome man
a fawning bird chooses a mate
in celestial dance
heels over the head
dazed by love whispers
sweet nothing direct to romantic ear
in hypnotic trance
flies to heaven's gates
high-fives non-judgmental God
bright hope's fluttering heart
agrees to revisit an almost lost
a fairytale of rapidly rescued pretty girl
imprisoned by wicket powers
of her own mind
a fading memory swings on a golden globe
rising high against romantic omen
of twinkling stars...filled with endless love
eons ago to cast forever an infinite
and vast magic in ephemeral space
an unmet expectation seems
to lower itself into gentle end
of an impressive life that comes along
with tap on shoulder of an eluding dream
mull over a recurring doubt
given what can understand
clearly couldn't before
take a bite from the tree of knowledge apple
find out unbearable love's
attitude acceptable once
upon a time...not rectified now
nor tapped into the truth of life
frowned upon witty thought
on St Valentine's expense
pilloried by a lavishly
enlightened folk of modern kind
naturally pioneering a new spirit
brave enough to abandon
inflicted pain of the seven-year-itch
a flying child unlocking
cupid's chemistry bow
mocked by a large crowd
assuming the worst
a mere purpose that's engulfed
in a stress...a hardship...a sacrifice
made for love's gentle ghost
only a few have seen...hard to find
rarely entwined for life
a romantic infatuation game replaced
by a friendship and a quiet rapport...now
an angle not seen before
and propensity to pine
for a significant other's good nature
and a ready smile enriching life
meaningful way...awaken
to an illusion of life...with a pink rose
plucked from the Garden of Eden...

The ups and downs of love over a long period of time, can mean many things to someone. Love in the young is expected and viewed differently than one who has experienced many facets of the heart.
I like how you chose the words so that nothing is set in stone, kind of just go with the flow for what it is. Looking forward to reading other of your writes..
love can have many forms and faces. a very thought provoking write. How can we mold time to our advantage? we spend a lifetime trying, learning and perhaps in the end, winning.
So apt and timely on Valentine's Day but on any day of the year. I can completely relate. I recently met someone again whom I had not seen since she was five and I was seven. I know it will seem not real but I really loved her then and it was stronger that ever when we met again after over fifty years. Circumstances are not allowing us to be together but it changes nothing for me and my love for her. I love your poem, Isabella. Thank you for sharing it. Love and best wishes to you,
Thank you Isabella for this lovely poetic journey. As you clearly described, love goes through so many stages. Some are, infatuation, romantic hints and gestures, deep romance, love-hate jealously, and the list goes on and on... True love is unconditional love and that is extremely rare. My marriage has moments of that but it's far from perfect as is life. Still these moments are to be cherished. I pray that your moments of unconditional love multiply and exceed your wildest dreams. Somehow I feel you deserve it and are well overdue. May God Bless you with an overflowing abundance of agape (unconditional)love! Amen!
Your poem speaks volumes of innocent and often unrequited love that can be garnered over time through experience with what love brings. I enjoyed the journey back to 1998 with you.
Very true and often hidden away to avoid the comparison on one pain to another, one joy to another. And I love both the picture and your description of the rose.

A Valentine night you thought you had forgotten and
the memories rolled into your conscious soul.
May you awaken each day with a rose in hand as a gentle reminder that you are loved, and you are a precious human being deserving of life's joys and sorrows in proportion to your needs. You have endless talents and gifts that those in your circle of friends (and lovers) know better than you ever suspect. If I were among them, I would tell you so!
The second book of the trilogy, The Chronicles of Henry Roach-Dairier, this volume will be enjoyed by astute 10 or 11 year olds as well as adults. A reader does not have to read To Build a Tunnel First to understand this volume.
