I tell my Dad it’s for his lunch
handing him a big red apple
He puts it into his briefcase
to say I am the apple of his eye
He leans to kiss my forehead
and I hug his neck tight like
He says his Tuesday meeting
will make him late getting home
It is 7:40 and I hustle to make
it to my school class at 8:05
The first hour passes swiftly but
a few minutes into the next hour
my whole world is blown away in
dust-filled death and destruction
The first airplane is followed by
the second crashing Twin Towers
My stomach knots as I retch
seeing both buildings fall
And tears fill both eyes realizing
that my apple would never be a part
of the lunch wished for my Dad
