Gone With His World

His family’s ongoing farm has long since ceased to be one.
No tenant for the old home place to work its fields, feed hungry
animals, repair barns and fences, do battle with a big house,
where the rot inside is eating away like rats stealing cheese,
prompting a sister and brother to nudge him into selling.
But this land with buildings has always been his world.

The ninety acres of fields and trees - his growing up school.
The creek a myriad of escapes from a broiling sun and parents.
The barn - where animal friends and he depended upon each other
for friendship and daily food. The big old house an unforgettable
shrine of maturing, now holding memories of a stumbling childhood
followed by awkward teen years.

Like a game-losing team captain - on a two minute warning -
it's time to take desperate action before the contest ends.
He drives there - to walk quietly along his stream of dreams,
and to saunter through a one-time buzzing home for horses and
cows. Then, starting in the kitchen, he inspect each room before
going up to the dark attic of treasured long-kept secrets

Finally he is on the front porch to sit in a rickety contraption
and swing slowly and pensively toward a must make decision
that is already made for him !
