Poem Artwork

FISH

Trying to maintain its suspended position
versus water's muscular contra-flow,
its fluid outline is indistinct -
an assembly of mirrored fragments
adhering to an energy, like magnetised filings.

Diffracted sunlight scorches river surface,
seeming to cause a melt of waters beneath.
I shoot out a hand, attempting a catch,
but grasp only weed, stepped three inches left.
Angles bend, dimensions change,
extremity no longer mine.

Slippery mediums, water and light:
the fish - so many thousand shimmering pixels -
composes elsewhere a different picture.

Refraction has driven many to distraction, like our perceptions of many things...Ed noted something very profound, "if only we had the eye capability of animals...". I don't think animals are quite as distracted by the possibilities...

Fish are truly intriguing creatures - and this is a most intriguing poem, Kate. If only we had the eye capability of animals like the bear and the eagle and the osprey, we, too, could scoop them up quite easily.

Ya know they have neat lures for catching those fish. Though I must admit that in my younger days I tried it the same way. Great pen

Splendid the way you capture your theme if not the fish itself;-)

Kate,

Slippery mediums, water and light
the fish--so many thousand shimmering pixels-
composes elsewhere a different picture.

Captured superbly and succinctly--SPOT ON!

It is hard to catch them that way but sometimes you can reach in a catfish hole and catch them.
