Purely a product of my imagination...

Poem Artwork

Take Me Back To The Heather

As the young soldier laid dying on the battlefield of the Bonnie Prince his mind to ease the pain of his suffering mercifully drifts off into the beloved highlands and as the last of the smoke clears over the chorus of moans and groans of the injured, in his mind he writes his own eulogy…

I see the pipers marching in line

O’er the fields of purple heather

And the bonny lass I loved so well

Wears in her Tam a Robin’s feather

While the blazing sun in the sky

Brings a tear to her pretty eye

As she dreams of our last kiss

Before war said bye and bye

I’m laid out in the tartans

Of Clan Fitzroy of the Highland

My claymore is my badge

And my comrades close by stand

My Ma sheds her tears of regret

For the young boy she beget

As she looks at my scarred body

One more sight she’ll ne’er forget

For there’s the stone of me father

Of me Uncles, brother and cousin

They all died with honour afore me

When the pipes called the young men

Now the Thompson drums rattle

As they lower my body below

Where I’ll nourish the heather so…

it will continue to grow

You set this poem up so creatively, Fee. A fine piece to be proud of. Love how this pulls on the heart string and ends with a message of renewal. Love and Hugs,

Clearly: war sucks. But if it brings out such a piece... who needs peace?
I didn't know that it was possible, my dear, but your creations -since #2000 - are dramatically improving.
Another smootch,
Becca~

I remember reading about Robert Roy (Rob Roy) MacGregor, and Sir William Wallace, fighting for the rights and freedom of all of Scotland, against the English. You have written a very fine tribute to them, and to the fighting forces since, that have given their lives to defend their country. I felt the words in my heart, Felix, and they are very powerful words too. Publish this in every magazine that you can, including ones in the UK and Eire.

May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie

Ach, I can ne'er resist the dirge of those mournful pipes, Felix. And a bed of heather would be a glorious resting place, to be sure, as befits someone of stirling strength and character. So sure and steady and dignified within the outpouring of emotion. Highlands, lowlands... the Scottish hills and glens would welcome their own for certain sure. The feeling you pour into this feels positively native. Kate xx

Honor the soldiers which went forever sleeping on the glen slopes, as the bagpiper sings not in sorrow but with proud under a sunset sky showing mixed, all the tartan colors of each clan.
Fee, one of your very best! (a keeper!)
