A Mark on a Chart
By: Felix Perry
I once stood on the very top of the world
Felt alone even with crew mates close by
Frigid, breath-stealing, wind at my back
I saw a view so stark would make you cry
Off in the distance, like an unmarked grave
The North Pole sleeps, disguised in virgin white
Just some lats and longs, marked on a chart
I walked about spellbound by the sight
I once sailed through the Northwest Passage
Heard the crack and thunder of the growler ice
I have seen polar beers and the sly silver fox
Long months from home a true and fair price
The passing years steal our youth from us
I hear the ice cap is now melting into the sea
So, I’m glad I went North so many years ago
I’ll always have that as a treasured memory…
I hear the ice cap is now melting into the sea
So, I’m glad I went North so many years ago
I’ll always have that as a treasured memory…
Your words are stark, harsh, and very real considering the state of our planet with regard to climate change and such. Thank you for sharing your experience, Fee. Love and peace to you,

My friend, Herb Morrison (of Hindenburg fame), told me that his greatest accomplishment was also going to the North Pole, but he flew there, not having to brace against the cold, the wind and the desolation for months to get there and then come back.
I wrote his story in an article beyond the North Pole and the Hindenburg as much of it as I knew in the three years that was the treasurer and he was the president of our community.
