I just received a note the other day in church from a 91 yr. old Baptist preacher calling out for help. He has outlived all of his family and has no one. He lives alone and has little companionship. This is the time of the year when Christmas, Thanksgiving and other family gatherings take place and it can be the toughest time of the year for some. There was once a time when folks opened their homes to strangers but sadly the rule is we should not even talk to strangers. Trust in our fellow human beings is not commonplace. Sadly this leaves many folks home alone and shut out from the world when most of us are celebrating this time year.

Thanksgiving is on the horizon I can smell home- made dressing and pumpkin pie Christmas will be coming soon... See the gleam of joy in the children’s eyes Families will be making plans to gather together once again It will be a wonderful season for so many relatives and friends But there will also be folks who are lonely and hurting pretty bad Yes, they were once a brother, sister, grandparent, mom or a dad But for some reason they outlived all the rest of the folks closest to them So they’ll probably spend this time alone unless somehow they find another friend It’s not easy to trust a stranger that we encounter in a meeting or somewhere down the street After all, we were taught to beware of strangers so we are cautious to those new folks that we meet Trust and hope can only take place when people open up the doors to their homes and their hearts Somehow we must give others a chance for we all deserve to a second chance celebrate life with a new start Have a Wonderful Thanksgiving Filled With Hope, Christ Love and Abundant Joy! This is sadly so true...There's a man that lives next door to me and he's all alone...just him and his little dog. He's from Texas originally, but been here nearly 20 years. I intend to include him in our festivities this holiday season...

As I read, I envisioned in my mind a lot of happy people, gathered at a table full of food. Your writing is outstanding, well done!

Many wonderful thoughts expressed in your poem. Especially for those who are alone and unable to celebrate with the rest of us. My own mother, now 88, with many friends and relatives gone is feeling quite lonely. Next week she will move into a assisted-living home where hopefully she will meet new people and make new friends.

I would encourage anyone like I always did, to visit our elderly as often as we can.

Trains, planes and automobiles was a very poignant film.

"It's not easy to trust a stranger." Great line, yet that stranger will become a close friend. (or mad axeman :))

Yes, that is sad. But he could have enrolled himself into the Old Folks Nursing Home, he would have lots of friends surrounding him. My friend's sister used to work in a nursing home, and during holidays or special occasions the volunteers made gift baskets to give to those who didn't have any visitors so they would not feel so left out. The volunteers feel good about giving these gifts as well. :o)
