A Canadian poet enjoys her summers on Southern Ontario’s suburban fringes:
A hammock, a hot day, a leaf adrift:
I love these warps and wefts of resistance
as breezes buffet and butterflies lift
alongside, alike, tacking existence;
enveloped, vaulted sky and grassy sea;
suspended, forest core to urban fringe.
A heron lands on quay, his bended tree;
nearby boggy pond, waterfowl still binge.
Echoes persist of habitat’s pardon.
I hear the hum of traffic over hill,
phantom footfalls native to this garden,
caring to keep these legacies we kill;
content to cohabit woodlands and lawn,
wildness as vital as the next day's dawn.
Helga, loved this poem and you imaged for us urban blight's encroachment on the natural wonders of our earth, as well as our need to contemplate the legacy we will leave for our children...

Great sonnet, Helga. I felt myself transported to the minute paradise you created. Great imagery -- I could feel the breeze, the relaxation -- the surrounding nature. And all of that give strength to your statement in the last four lines. Excellent work!

I feel the same,we need to coexist with nature,treasuring itand all of its roots and history.In australia where I live we have already lost mountains of the original wildlife and flora,we will never have them again.the dawn is not as pretty knowing this.Your poem reminds me,it is in every country ,humans wrecking legacies.
