Neuroticism: A mental or personality disturbance not attributable to any known neurological or organic dysfunction...

Poem Artwork
LIFE IS NOT EASILY BORNE:
.
Prone to underplaying, he gazed forlorn
Into another eddying context, one unforeseen,
And unwanted, and, (according to his own stuttering
Attempts at interpreting) rife with the unnecessary...
.
Always, as the
Winds howled, and the
Waters swirled around him,
His life would filter through the
Moments like sand through a sieve,
Immersing him in conditions that
Only worsened the audits of a
Stubbornly unyielding soul...
.
Hoping to simplify whatever lesson
Was being doled him, the man strained
And struggled against the rage of impulses
Reaming his personal and treasured designs;
And though he drank
Himself carefree; he still endured...
.
And being settled to dissemble his
Neuroticism as being inconsequential,
He zipped up his nonchalance like a jacket,
And bolstered his pride as if all the facets
Of his being were as they should be...
.
His anguished life would be a lake;
(Elemental, unadorned, approachable)
Something that people were easily drawn to;
He recognized that surfaces were what mattered,
And he was laudably skilled at creating semblances...
.
His would be a planar creation, a pleasing
Facade that others could look at (en passant) or dip
Their hands into momentarily without being scuppered.
He would wear tailor-made suits, and no one would ever
Again have to acknowledge his collection of driftwood,
(Once alive, rooted, and verdant) now effectively
Hidden behind his pricey jade bolo...
.
At last, he knew he was reachable …
And as pleasantly benign words were freed daily
From his soul - to swarms of passerby’s too self-absorbed
To care - he smiled still and smoothed the lapels of his tailored
Suit in anticipation of something good happening...

Such power in these poignant lines, brilliant character portrayal, Richard - undone by the power in your pen - well done.

Glad to know of this subject. It hits home in a hard way with Grandson. Hoping his illness is curable and leads him to a wonderful married life.

"although he drank himself carefree"...I've known so many that take this path...avoidance is not awareness...you've described it very well....to me he is displaying symptoms of greater awakening, but without a connection...

Your words offer me so many perspectives Richard, mostly all these wonderful connections which reach from the soul of love, like an ingrained truth. This beautiful feeling you give that opens another (definitely me) to feel this absolute purity of emotion through your words. It’s just captivating! The outer shell may grasp the wandering superficial, but your presence always draws me into your work full force. I would dive right in this lake of “neuroticism (as a collection of driftwood)” and not remain as a bystander...to swim deep with such genuine emotion is an offering of the most beautiful thing...true treasures, this is such a wonderful poetic expression of self, someone whom is centered & planted & flowing & leading an authentic life despite it all; Jeremiah, through your words inspires beautiful feelings to this reader...and Richard I love the mood photo! You see some beautiful things where you go hiking...

They said that in every fire there is the voice of many a wood telling a story as it goes up in flames and sometimes the turmoil in the man psyche is like driftwood shaken and driven by violent forces outsides of his will domain, sailing along with his nightmares.

Too many hide behind the pricey accessories. Perhaps driftwood is preferable. Very nice.

Richard, just one of so many exquisite lines admired by
this passerby who is convinced that something good does
happen at the hand of an accomplished poet. Bravo.
