Lily Tomlin as Ernestine

A pet peeve of mine. You could easily
substitute “Mr” for “Miss” except that might misinform. ;-)

Poem Artwork

Please, Miss Information give me a hand,
I am being misunderstood,
throughout the land.

When I have a question I search the web,
I am directed to FAQs,
until I go to bed.

FAQs never have the answer,
to the question I pose.
So just try to find that number,
to call, I suppose.

Short of 911 and south of 1411,
I’ve found the number,
and think that I am done.

If they are open,
often not the case.
I am greeted with a menu,
I would like to erase.

Except for “English,”
my selections are none,
pressing "0" for operator,
may think I've won.

So I write a letter,
on their e-mail form.
Only to get a response,
from a robot gnome.

When I finally get a real live,
person on the phone.
She's a minimum wage temporary,
with a mind like a clone.

"Hold please," she says in a flash,
the Muzak comes on,
while my thoughts clash.

A supervisor is nowhere to be found,
"Please leave a message."
[Will give you a call,
when we get around].

A tech with all the answers,
arrives on the phone.
Two hours later,
I'm no closer to home.

Miss Information is wild and free,
everything else costs money,
with minimum wagers,
at the base of the tree.

I certainly feel your pain, Ron. I deal with insurance companies all day long and that is the run-around I seem to get more often than I get answers...and forget about computer stuff; I can hear the person on the phone thumbing through pages trying to find the answer to my issues though they don't seem to have a clue where to even start...and then there is the person living in a foreign land who speaks to me in a form of English I cannot understand and wants to go into the heart of my computer to have me fix the problem. One wrong press of a key and my machine will be toast...do I guess at what they are saying or just give up, transfer all my data onto some disks and buy a new machine? Damn, I remember when even gas stations provided service and were actually called "Service Stations." It seems as though technology and both improved and ruined everything. Love this poem, Ron.
Take care,
Sherry

"Miss Information" is a malaise symbolic of our civilization's desire to become physically disengaged from other human beings. Corporate types saw it as a means to an end. Automatons manning every answering service. No wages, no benefits no perquisites to worry about. That the customers would not be serviced, mattered not. If we could plant and harvest the angst this creates we could feed mankind. You attacked this information gap with great expertise Ron. I bid you love and peace my dear friend. Jon Michael

GOOD JOB...I worked in a call center and the minimum wage workers are often limited by client contracts, not always because they are stupid....it's the management that is the problem.....Sue

A most apt and timely rant, Ron. I am sure many can relate to the experience that you have shared through your verses here. I certainly know that I can. Your play on the words "Miss Information" is much like what I used in my latest "poem" posted here on Friday. Love and peace to you and real people at the other end of the phone line,

Regis
