Having survived fungus on my lungs, I hope that parasite hasn't penetrated the brains of so many wishful thinkers wanting the 1950s to come back in the 21st century. Surely that parasite has had time

Fungus

There is a fungus among us,

and it is growing very fat.

hidden in the cracks of memory,

I wouldn't go so far as that.

Favorite food of cicadas,

it grows amid the quacks.

Niches left unforgotten,

by self-respecting hacks.

It calcifies old brain cells,

leaves no distinguishing marks.

But infiltrates innermost senses,

blocking forward while it parks.

Into the minds of many,

remembering Semper Fi.

Forgetting what was lost,

on that adrenaline high.

A long forgotten belief,

in the strong over the weak,

survival of the wealthy,

to hell with the meek.

Beware the fungus among us,

we must reverse its course,

Unless we wish backward thinking,

is a way to end this verse.

Humorous and, at the same time, ominous. Humor has a way of opening minds and, hopefully, rooting out the fungus! Thanks for sharing this. It sounds like a fun one for an in-person poetry reading. Sincerely, Corrine Ardoin

THIS 'FUNGUS' HAS BEEN AMONG US FOR A LONG TIME, RONALD. AND THERE WAS A TIME WHEN ONE THOUGHT IT REALLY WAS DYING. BUT SADLY WE FOUND THAT IT DIDN'T TAKE MUCH FOR RESTING, 'INCLINED' MINDS TO BE RE-INFECTED TO THE POINT, IT SEEMS, OF NO RETURN. HOWEVER, WE PRESS-ON, HOPING IN GOD AND BELIEVING IN HIS WORD, WHICH TELLS US THAT 'ALL' THINGS WILL WORK TOGETHER FOR OUR GOOD WHEN WE TRUST HIM. IN OTHER WORDS...THE 'FUNGUS' CANNOT GO ANY FURTHER THAN 'GOD' ALLOWS. THIS IS DEFINITELY A PERIOD IN OUR HISTORY WHICH CALLS FOR US TO, '...LIVE BY FAITH...', NOT BY SIGHT. WELL DONE, MY FRIEND...THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

These reviews say it all; Mark & Odin describe you poem well. Metaphor walks your excellent rhyming while structure carving images of reality born from a simple life cycle of in nature. From a piece of our earth's nature you delve into the burnt soil left by half our fellow citizens. Well played!

A good story put to rhyme. The fungus among us is the political nonsense that is tearing the American people...
relatives avoiding a family dinner because one or more of us does not relieve as one or more of us believes...
Longtime friends avoiding each other .
I'm white so I must be a raciest.
You're black so you might want to harm me.
The fungus is growing within the pores and cells of our brains.

I am so sick and tired of the sexist, racist bullshit that is growing as a rotten fungus within our mortal existence.

As usual, a well-penned journey into a metaphoric wonderland of images that speak eloquently. We could probably go on and on with all the different humanoid fungus that proliferated our society, but few of us need to mention him again. We'll leave that to Facebook, if and when they bring that king-sized fungus back into the social media.
