On the corner of the teacher's desk
Where all the children could see,
Was a simple box all wrapped in red
To lend it frivolity.

All through the week of Valentine's Day,
They waited for the party,
Painstakingly writing on their cards,
"Dear Joe... Dear Ann... Dear Marty..."

Each valentine bore sweet sentiments ~
A heart with some lace that matched,
Or a funny, cute little greeting
With a lollipop attached.

The children were so wound up that day
As Teacher gave out the cards ~
Some children smiled as they counted theirs,
But for others, it was hard.

You see, some got a big stack of cards ~
What a wonderful surprise!
Others got only a card or two ~
And went home with tear-filled eyes.

In later years, a wise soul took note
Of the pain some kids received,
So a new rule was made and followed:
"Cards to each classmate - Take heed!"

The children learned to think of others;
Not to leave anyone out.
These words on the box, a reminder ~
"Caring is what love's all about!"
