The holidays rapidly approach
And my thoughts turn
To those who stand
In harm's way,
Who will spend Christmas
Far from home,
And who will continue to fight
To keep me safe
From terrorists' atrocities.
I remember
From my childhood
The men and women
Who remained
At their posts
With but a card
Or maybe a small gift
To link them to loved ones
During this most nostalgic
Time of year,
And I vow
That I will do
Whatever I can
To ease the loneliness
Of those now deployed
On my behalf.
This small comfort,
Whatever it may be,
Is the least I can do
For all they do
For me.
Yes, they're mostly young men and women thrust into the most difficult situation and times like the holidays are particularly stressful because they do not have the anchor they had when they were children.
Which leads me to a bigger problem. The children of divorce probably have a lot of stress and loneliness this time of year too, what with the tug-of-war trying to meet both parents' expectations. In spite of my parents' quarreling a lot, they never split so we always had both of them at Christmas time even though sometimes, Dad would be off drinking when he should have been home.
