Very moving tibute to a wonderful horse. Unfortunately the racing industry is not fully understood by many. I worked in it for 3 years, and yes - the sport is tough, but those horses do what they love to do and there will always be broken bones, just like in human sports. The difference is that a human bone can be mend, an equine bone can not.
Thank you for your kind words, Karla. I know how much this tears you up.
Love,
Becca~
A moving tribute and the question you asked remains unanswered!.. I also watched the race and had picked her to win . It was a tragic thing to see......M

Although I've never heard of Eight Belles, I am touched and sadden by all the comments and your heartfelt tribute ... She made an impact on many lives ... Wonderfully penned sweetie ... :(
Such a beautiful poem from such sadness. My heart goes out to all that put so much love and effort to make her such a great horse.

I couldn't believe it when I heard the news and the tears welled again when I read the paper, today. She fought so hard, against odds so great --- the filly against the others. I was so happy that she finished second and then, so mortified when I learned what had happened. Every time the Derby rolls around now, I think of Barbaro and his struggles; now, her memory will haunt the race, too.
I've been around horse racing for my entire life --- seriously, I learned to walk at a horse track. It is a tragic fact of life when horses of that size and that much weight place so much force on the smallest part of their bodies --- the legs. You'd think that their legs would be built stronger for such weight, but they're not. That fragility makes them special, but it makes a time like this even sadder.
She was my choice! Suffice it to say I was stunned. My number is eight and my mothers maiden name is Belle. I too shed tears. Still no explanation for how it happened, seems strange to me. Excellent write Karla!
No matter sad, I love this poem, Karla! I watched the race yesterday, and too was shocked and saddened by the tragedy. She ran her heart out, and was stopped only by her weakest part, front ankles...just after she won second place in the Run for the Roses.

Heartbreaking write, Karla; may Eight Belles never be forgotten! I don't much care for horse racing either, especially when the animals get hurt. And for what cost, may I ask??
