No, seriously, I was musing about this the other day-- thinking what if words had souls. What if words are beings--people? Does that then mean that working and reworking a poem makes us slave-drivers? Or what if we just let the poem "come"? In that case, then are we setting "people" free? Or are words seeds-- grown from inspiration... each, if planted, forming a new fruit full of seeds for the taking--formed, reformed, and tasting ever-the-sweeter for having been replanted yet again?
I have heard of people stealing apples before. But if there's an apple there--offered to you for a taste, then isn't it a compliment to take those seeds and plant them in your own mind's garden to see what blossoms there?

I would say that you are not a thief because I don't believe words belong to a specific person, so you couldn't have stolen them. Words are free to use and return, so maybe you are a borrower. I do know that when you are finished working with the words a wonderful poem remains.

Words are not unique, they are everywhere and they have ALL been used, it is just a matter how they are arrange. I think you can be let off the hook here, because as for me, I have not seen these words in this order before. Whew! I was worrying about it for a moment.
clever Karla your witty ways shine here,and aren't we all thieves if you think of it your way, but you know it is what you make of the words that separates the poet from the pilferer!;-)

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, as they say. You can give 10 chefs the same bag of ingredients; but only one will make the meal "right."
The words may have been used before, but not in the way you did and thats what makes them unique and yours, what a wonderful gift you have too!
