Homesick for Ohio ...

(Image (c) 2011, Karla Dorman)

Poem Artwork

'Before I'm Lost'

to time and memory,
I want to return to the rolling hills
and open skies
of the Midwest where I was born:

Life was kinder.  Gentler.
I remember:  the sun timed our days (just
as long as we
were home before it turned full dark).

Neighborhood kids gathered
for a game of baseball:  Dad, the pitcher
who'd celebrate
each time someone hit a home run.

The yearly drive to the
amusement park:  the excitement building
as high as the
coaster peaks on the horizon.

Summer picnics under
the Weeping Willow:  the air scented with
goodness from the
hot dogs and burgers on the grill.

Raking colors falling
from the trees in the woods behind our home:
it didn't seem
fair the neighbor's leaves would join ours.

Shoveling snow:  I was
The Designated One who had to keep
up with the storm.
Snow blower?  Not Dad:  he had me.

And now I'm in Texas:
been here a long time.  When asked where I'm from,
I always say,
Ohio.  Buckeye roots are deep.

Karla, it is not possible for most of us to forget our roots. Sounds like you are longing for yours in the Buckeye state my dear friend. I bid you love and peace. Jon Michael

Lovely, Karla, the poem and the poems within. Read each first lines all the way through, each seconds, and thirds and .. finals. In emotional terms, I felt like the author described my childhood, poignantly, in relative pasts.

Great poem, Karla :) I remember when I was little, we made the yearly trek to King's Island. Favorite memories. Though I still reside in my home area, it never feels as it felt when I was a child.

Karla,

Woderful poem--I remember doing all these things too and having a happy childhood, though not rich. I think our kids today are missing so much of what made our childhoods great. well written!

You trigger memories of where I grew up, too, Karla. I like the way this piece reads...the glimpses. Great work:)

You know what i live in the same small area I was born but I get nostalgic too, I miss the long summer days, sitting on the porch swing with my cousins sipping Country time Lemonade, but I am blessed in the moment as well, blessed because I have friends like you...Thank you for the memories!!!

Boy this brought back memories. Always out till dark. Never in the house, unlike most kids today. My childhood was not good, but inside everything bad,you can always find a smear of good. This did that for me, thanks Karla.
