The Canal’s banks
are badly dressed
soiled and spoiled
with the ravages
of floods’ past
plastic bags that
last and last…
long after their use has passed
that nature can’t digest
in nature, rests and infests
carriers carried by strong
currents tugged along
snagged and tagged
on branches jagged
like worn out rags
left out on washing lines
now ragged and ravaged
ripped, stripped and straggly
flags of our consumption madly
in nature’s dumping ground
now found and bound
sadly ~~~
Saw your poem and link on Comment is Free so I thought I would make contact here. Love the poem, had mixed feelings about the article on CiF. Plastic bags are an evil in themselves but the solution lies in people becoming more aware. How many plastic bags does it take to equal a dumped matress or fridge?
But as far as Government action goes, they are a diversion. "Oh look everyone," goes the script, "we've taxed plastic bags, we're really concerned about the environment." (aside: planning permission for ten new hypermarkets Mr Tesco, certainly, send us the money in small denomination notes in a plastic ban; new runways and terminals at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stanstead, certaibly Mt. BA, a few share options will do nicely."
