a mess of pink tutu and wings
just a tiny faery with a chocolate smile

but bruised faeries are worthless

especially ones that cry
ones that laugh too loudly
ones that speak a little too often
she'd paint her face when they weren't looking
little faery in hot-cherry-chanel
blood lips to match mammas
black eyes to hide the real ones beneath
no one wants a bruised faery
[you'll never be daddy's girl]
-you're far too ugly girl-
and she would fall
small, dimpled face
slamming into the linoleum
and somehow she was reminded
of going fishing with daddy
of laughing and finding her faery wings
and then of the dull thud of flesh and bone
muscle and rage
all colliding in a single effort
to make her fly
and she would scream
just another bruised faery
discovering the insane urge
to die.
This is brilliant. Your eye for detail matches dead-on the sentiment of the piece. Everything is alive and hopeless, save for the unacknowledged fact that the central character IS still alive and thriving.
Stanley Kubric once said of "The Shining" that it is actually optimistic because at least we know something exists after death. Perhaps the same is true of living tragedy: there is always the possibility of escape in the hanging on.
