(For my step-father, who's just undergone chemo...)
Dedicated to Moses Tabe Nkwo my mother's love...

Poem Artwork

Been trying to call you
but didn't know what to say
I'm overwhelmed
and oh so sad
my heart is breaking
to hear you're stricken
right now
all I want to do
is wrap you in my arms
and make everything better
cry with you
feel weak with you
ease your pain
strengthen you

I may not have always been
the best step-daughter
but you were always my hero
that spot was never filled
tall, dark and handsome
you were
still are
all that's past is forgiven
all that's gone is forgotten

When I was a little girl
you wrapped your arms around me
you cared
you were my strength when I was weak
you comforted me
you sang to me
filled my head with your wisdom
I can never forget
I will never forget
all those moments
when it was just you and I
I've carried them with me in my heart
throughout those times
when we'd fallen apart
Not having you to talk to
was never easy for me
how I want those years back
I'd pick up the phone and call you
even if to say nothing at all
how I want those years back
the many times I've missed
opportunities to call you Dad...

You are in my heart in such
a special way-- only God knows how
in my prayers
in my thoughts
and I will carry them all
everyday to the Lord
for as long as I live
and beg him
and plead for one special moment
a moment when I can look into your eyes
and call you Dad.

(If only my love could heal you...you're already healed!)

Update: Just called my mom back home and my Dad is in a bad shape, he can't even talk, one of his lungs just collapsed...so I've asked my mom to print this out and read it to him by his bedside))))))))))))))

It touches me in the deepest way to read these lines.
Lines for a man, a man who stayed on his line.
Poetry for a man, whose personality was poetic.
Full of beauty, full of pride and true to simplicity
Oh how it hurts to read these words, meant to be comforting but a somehow painful.
To be like you was my dream, but this dream i dared not chase.
For it takes more courage than i have, to be like you.
True to your self, and true to your principles .
All your pain i felt,in its different forms.
To me you are Brother Moses, a loving man!!!

Again, this is such a heart-touching poem! But I do believe it takes one to personally witness the devastation of cancer. I can relate! Excellent!

heart-breakingly beautiful... My brother in law just lost his year long fight with cancer, so this one hits close to home. We all have things in our lives that we wish we could go back and do over. I know that was one of the hardest things about losing my mom so suddenly... I couldn't be there at the end...
I am sure he can feel your love and prayers.

Bernice, your words are powerful. I hope he heard your words and know that I will send out a prayer for you and your family. Cancer is very difficult... it has been the source of some of my most sad poems. :(

Bernice, this write is so touching and beautifully written. I am sorry for what you and your mom and dad are going through. I went through the same thing two years ago with my father...my step father... for the last 42 years...but to me, he was my dad...just as you have expressed here with your step father. You are in my prayers, Bernice.

It's great that you are a poet dear heart, you shared your inner feelings with your verse and your peers, it helps to be able to express, then pray and put it in God's hands. I'm sure he'll love this, call him dad anyway, scream it out to the heavens. Hope things improve for your loved ones, hugs

Tender compassion in these lines of healing - perhaps, your own form of medicine? It benefits the receiver and the giver - well done, Bernice, you and your step Daddy are in my prayers.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Bernice tell him all you have told us and do it now, for these are the words he needs to hear to giv him the strength he will need. Dad is the man who loved and cared for you, call your Dad now. Thank you for sharing your beautiful words.

Tell him all of it now, when you can see face to face each others worries and love, eulogies always will be unheard by those you love and will be coming too late.
Yes, tell him Dad, I love you!

Bernice,

Don't wait. Life is so short and so full of regrets. Imagine, one simple word can rock his world and bring peace to your heart. That's an awfully powerful word. Peace, Love, Prayers and God's Blessings Always, Paul.

Bernice as a stepfather to two girls (both grown up now with kids of their own) I can tell you that this poem and a letter signed by you would mean more to him than any flowers or cards could ever. Sent it to him if you can't take it there and have someone waiting to read it to him, it will make a difference. Then when you do call him...call him Dad.
