Poem Artwork

Blue and white caps peppered the evening sky
As joyous cries, of “we did it!” filled the night air.
Two hundred seniors, ready to start a new life.
For this phase was over, another to begin. They
contemplated a new beginning with all its joy and fear.

But for now, let’s leave the future to itself, and go and
Have some fun! After all we’ve earned it, for all that we
Have done.

They went from house to house enjoying their celebration,
Talking about now, future and the past. But hey, let’s stop
the serious talk and go on and have a blast! Someone shouted,
“hey we’re out of food, and the car’s out of gas”! J.C. volunteered
It’s not that far, I’ll take a walk to the corner store. Someone yelled to him,
"Hey, bro, take a flashlight". J.C. nor the rest of the class
had no idea of the horror about to take place that tragic night.

He walked out the door, not knowing his awful fate. He ran to
The store, they were running out of everything, and it was getting late.
J.C. heard the word 'Freeze!, and was frozen still
The cop looked at his face and knew
this was it.
He went to J.C. when his gun accidentally blew
J.C. lay in a heap, his life was through.

The class waited forever for him to get back, and were growing
A little impatient, where the heck was he at!   For some unknown reason,
One of the boys turned the music off.   His classmates yelled at him,
“hey, put that back on”. The young man ignored him, and like a robot,
walked over and turned the radio on.   The evening news was on,
an angry class demanded "turn that  junk off!"   But suddenly
their whole world collapsed when they listened to what was said. At the
corner store where J.C. had gone, a man was fatally shot dead.
The police were looking for a killer, and had for a long time, J.C. was
unfortunate to meet his profile to a dime.

The policemen explained, how could they know, a black man running
through a white neighborhood in the dead of night? It was an easy mistake,
After all, didn’t they all look alike?

A sad story indeed, Mary. Are things any better today? I really hope so. Love and best wishes,

Regis

the police were suppose to say freeze Mary, the average cop just won't shoot someone if they aren't sure, of course in 1974 the racist policeman probably would, happy holidays Mary

Wow, this is intense and really grabs the reader-how sad that this happens more than some people realize. Good good work.

This made me shudder, and is more of an ode or ballad than a poem. What a horrible situation so sensitively rendered. It was like reading a beautifully written short story with rhythm. Excellent.

tragedy is never a thing to be fully understood -- the unanswered questions continue to haunt our thoughts as long as we live -- peace and love to you Mary, my friend -- JMW

This is a very moving write...one to remind how far we have come...and how far we still need to go! Injustice may never be completely turned off for any of us, but it should certainly be the odd moment out rather than the norm...
May you have a wonderful Holiday season and find peace within as well as without,
Jim

I like to think times have changed since 1974 and racists attitudes have mellowed...this true story is indeed a reflection of a world sadly in need of more human kindness. Everything happens for a reason, we are temporary beings visiting earth, I have no doubt that many learned valuable human lessons that night and went on to reflect that change into the world. Bishop was a brave soul who spoke volumes! thanks for sharing
