Indian Summer Days

Photo of Castello Peschiera di Borromeo, near my home.

Poem Artwork

It was a picture postcard, mid-October day

with the feel of Connecticut –

the kind they call Indian Summer.

There was that undeniable, crisp autumn smell in the air

that belongs only to October,

and she shuffled through leaves as she walked,

the warmth of the sun on her shoulders.

She continued down narrow winding roads –

past corn fields and the castle –

the one called Peschiera Borromeo,

stopping to pet a stray dog on the way.

Then strolled through the gates of the old stone inn

where she sat in the garden, sipping hot lemon tea.

And when finished, she retraced her steps,

heading toward home –

with thoughts of her next autumn outing.

Dawn, I'm trying to catch up after my days in hospital. Before writing a word, I discovered that this poem holds a record of sorts on AD. Never before have I seen 30 reviews under a posted poem. Most are not even close, and I cheered recently when I scored 14. We have many readers, but you bring out the commentary! Each of the 30 is justified and well earned. This work is lovely beyond words. I'm so glad that I know you....... and your work. Mitt Luff, -Bill

You have captured the warmth in all ways here, Dawn. Your word paintings take us there, but your characterisations add the heartbeat which thrills to such pleasures. Fabulous sense of wealth (in the natural realms!) and well-being. xx

Dawn,
One of your talents is giving a character/voice a "real" feel - as though this is someone you are watching when you write. Nicely penned:)

Oh I love autumn no matter where you walk, but I bet Italy is extremely beautiful..I am also sure that New England certainly has the most colorful environment of all.
Loved this poem, Dawn,

Dawn, as I read this beauty, I was struck with the scene painted by one of the grant masters of oil and canvass, van Gogh before insanity took him . . . Or maybe Toulouse-Lautrec . . . Stunningly done . . .

Dawn, I would love to make that stroll. To me, April may be the
cruelest, but October is the loveliest month of the year. My only
tour of Europe was in an October too many year ago. You lovely
poem brings it all back to me. Thanks. -gene.

What a beautiful poem! It brings back memories of the farm when walks through the woods were glorious outings that gave me kinship with nature. I now walk every day when the weather is good, (and ride my bike) but your character's path leads her past much more interesting places than I get to see.
