Poem Artwork

The youngest sister, the princess,
(At least that is what the other ogres
            called her behind her back)

she always walked around
with her head in the clouds,
while the other eight ogres toiled,
with their hands in the soil.

She gave the excuse
that her fair skin
would burn too easily,
even from the “First Kiss”
of the cool April sun…

            (Realistically,
            there were many other reasons,
but she knew the other ogres
            wouldn’t understand her need
            to exercise poetic license

and be a different kind of ogress...)

so she kept those other reasons
in her head
and spent time inside, instead,
doing 2008 other things,
and day dreaming all the while…
with her head in the clouds.

And besides…
she didn’t like that dirty soil!
It compressed much too easily for her liking
--compressed under the edges
of her perfectly formed fingernails.

(She could thank her mother for those finely shaped nails…
And she did…each time she looked at them.)

She stretched more leagues
than she could count
to keep herself clean and neat.

(Well, as clean as an ogress can be
when it hasn’t rained in weeks!
            And speaking of which…
Do you know just how difficult it is
            to wash your hair
when your head is above those clouds??)

She didn’t like living the life of an ogress.

Secretly she hoped, and dreamed,
(as she rested her head on pillows of clouds)
that someday a knight would come
and marry her and carry her away
to exotic lands
(like Haiti)
that she could see
from her vantage point above the clouds.

But then reality would hit,
as her ogress and ogre siblings
would return home from toiling
many leagues away…

And they would laugh,
as they bumped up against her arms
with their dirty, soil-caked things,

and she would cry out,
“Don’t touch me!  My hands are clean!”

She never did understand the need
for the other ogres to be so cruel.

Surely they had hopes
that they dreamed too,
As they rested…
with THEIR heads in the clouds…

To be continued....

I am on a book signing tour, but tuned into Cryssa-land to find an ogression going on. I had to go backwards ogressively to find out where you started. You are on a roll of imagination and description with the poor thing against the dirty soil-caked things. Very entertaining even from a tired head here...Jerry

Charming, and it gives me an unexpected insight into the mind of an ogress (I didn't even know they came in 2 genders)
Well done!
