Coloring Today
Did you color when you were a child? Did you lie on the floor, dreaming up ways to make your pictures sing with all their hearts, like the birds who delighted following a shower? Did you wish you had a blue that came halfway up to the sky that was waiting for school to let out for the summer, just for you? That the Crayola saying Yellow was warm and buttery like the sun? Green a lot greener, red as red as flowers you could not name, but knew to be friends? Friendly clouds floated dollops of just-right cream you could taste. No white in any box up to that. Tell the truth. You were dying for a brown warm enough to do justice to a cow on a hill you passed once. Red barns and silver siloes and trees leafing umbrellas to make shade. All you can do is your best. Just let imagination add its touch. Guess what? Pictures can sing!
In what is called the North Carolina triangle, talking this minute. Azaleas, dogwoods, and redbuds vie in every shade of pink, white, lavender, and salmon. The redtip at the mailbox is frilled with white lace. Air a satin slip you don't need to pull and tug to get on. Drought-robbed earth sports a new nubby coat of green. If I died, don't tell me. Let me color to my heart's content. Better yet, come color beside me. Got lots of crayons. Don't have to stay inside the lines, and trees will give us shade for free. Worth the trip, believe me. Finish the book, we'll draw pictures of our own. What do you think?
I'm very glad you heeded the call of nature, Phyllis - and you've made me want to get out my old coloring book. Think I'll wander outside today, and hunker down with it under a maple tree. Thanks!

Pea, I love the imagery! I was a crayon collector;-) drove my mom mad, had to have every color there was.peeled the cover off and used them down to the nub. Thanks for the memory! Great write!
Save the magenta, maroon, blue-green and sea foam crayons for me, Pea. I loved those colors but rarely found much in my coloring book to use them on. The palette of nature is so much more colorful than even the great big "Giant" box of crayolas, but I still like to use crayons for accents in my drawings sometimes. They contrast nicely in their rigidness against the powdery softness of pastels or draw in a softer tone behind the starkness of charcoals. The hard part is trying to decide on just a couple of them from that box of 101 crayons. I love the whimsy of this poem, Pea.
Take care,
Sherry
I loved to color when I was little. That hasn't changed...I still break out the Crayolas from time to time. Other than reading, nothing calms me more. I try to color inside of the lines, being the perfectionist that I am...but then decide, the heck with it if I make a boo-boo. Now if I could do the same with my poetry......LOL
Thank you for this enjoyable read--well done! Keeping it.
Pea
I never could get the right colors and blend from my crayons at school, I would improvise and innovate by deftly mixing the colors to capture a varied effect...in or out of the lines...lols..
This is a much needed and welcome break for you I reckon, as your current magnificent art series must be taxing mentally and physically...
I know the demands of an extended series !
Merci Beaucoup !

I think well done girl, I am relearning all over again the joys of colouring both in the book and outside in nature, grandchildren will teach us all new.
"Coloring Today" brings a peaceful atmosphere and invites the reader to a walk through the prairie of beauty of the childhood's days.
In gratitude and reverent admiration.
