Poem Artwork

          Breathing Sun

I love the way a rose dies.
The way it holds its glow
by folding it just so,
then laying it in the shade
so rose-like at its center.
Heart painters try in vain
to replicate.  I love to bouquet
red blooms that have slowed
to turn a  pink more delicate
than baby.  Sigh with yellow
as it antiques itself ivory
or cream with the merest hint
of butter or melon. Meantime,
white suits up for winter
with tea-dyed collar and cuffs.
Color begins to talk in whispers,
then lets silence slip on stage.
Petals allow drought sick air
to sip, then gulp, dew they used
to hoard.  Need to move?
Tiptoe, please.  Such trouble,
some say.  We fail to see
the beauty.  Good in not being
able to handle rough.  Strain
of pumping bellows to fan life
slips minds.    Words, water,
food, air.   Degree of shade.
Like walking on eggs.
Close your eyes and smell.
Nothing like a living, breathing
rose.  Nothing like the memory
glowing above glass silhouetted
by sun or candle, then pressed
into an album to be handed
down.  A petal just drifted down.
I pick it up and slip it in
among the others at the foot
like a feather, like a kiss.

Beautifully written, roses are a stunning gift from God made for sheer pleasure. I have a peach colored rose in my flower garden, I can't wait every year for it to begin to bloom, I love to watch them from the beginning of the bud, untill the petals fall to the ground. Lovely write my friend, simply lovely!

This is a lovely poem, Pea, and I love your observations. A rose is beautiful in life and holds so many of our memories fast, even in its death. Very well done.

They are beautiful when fresh and to wonderfully fragrant when they dry. I've kept dried ones for years sometimes..I had a red one stuck in the middle of my bible for years, and it left a rose stain too LOL.

Your write captures the essence to perfectly, thanks Pea.

My 'god this is one hell of a touching write, I could almost smell the fading scent of the roses and in my mind the descriptions of the various shades came alive under your tender descriptions, and when you picked up the petal I swear I felt the satiney softeness of it on my fingertips. I could also feel the comparison to life and what a methaphor that is, the people who are beautiful (not in appearance necessarily) like the rose just adopt a new beauty in death. Once again congratulations this Phylis is one wonderful write.

Ummm, you bring the rose essence to us in this poem. My grandmother had a beautiful old rose pressed in her diary. She never talked about it. Very special. Good write, Phyllis.
