Love Must Be Free




I wish to tell you,
You do not know love,
Neither do I,
Having never had it…

But I think love is free,
It does not come with rules,
And lack of freedom,

It is not controlling or vain,
It is not questioning every move,
Or conversation I have with someone else,
It does not come with bars or chains,
Love is free…

It’s the only way it can be,
The only way to grow,
And age like fine wine,
It can’t grow confined,
Into the narrow confines of your mind,
Love must be free…

To come and go,
To walk in the garden alone,
To see the stars shine at night,
To miss you when things are not right…

Love must be freely given,
And freely taken,
With no strings or rules,
No rights or arbitration,

Love should not involve pain,
Or tears and angry words,
Love should not cause shame,
Or driving each other insane,
With grief and tears,

Love should never fear,
It should be open and clear,
Love should listen and strengthen,
Not cause you to be weak and meek…

Love should be free,
Of all of these-
Can’t you see?

I should like to teach you about love,
I would like to learn together,
I would like to learn to love you,
And feel your love for me,

But I think love should be free,
Of all these terrible things,
Don’t you agree?
