High Flight
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds -
and done a hundred things you have not dreamed of -
wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence.
Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along
and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,
where never lark, or even eagle, flew;
and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
the high untrespassed sanctity of space,
put out my hand and touched the face of God.
High Flight was composed by Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee, Jr., an American serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force in WWII. He was sent to England for combat duty in July 1941. On December 11, 1941 his Spitfire collided with another plane over England and Magee, only 19 years of age, crashed to his death.

Poem "High Flight" brings back many memories to so many
Pilots, Veterans and their Families...and its beautiful words
of pure poetry...cherished by so many of us...releases
the meditative energy within each of us...that encourages
to spread our wings...soaring up into the peaceful space
...above imprison mind...away from human suffering, pain...
Space...where it is possible to talk directly to ...God.
Poem that made human spirit, enthusiasm, faith...to live
forever...in it....in us.
