I know this "technique" well. I do not mean to "put down" anyone who uses this way as a method of getting by. This is not meant to abase anyone; if it were, I'd be hurting myself as well.
Smooth
You are smooth
You like
To be liked
So you pretend
You know
People like to walk
On smooth surfaces
So you ensure
Your exterior is smooth
You smile
Even though it belies
The look in your eyes
When you feel your façade fading
You cover up your feelings
Nod and smile
Uphold your denial
With a pill or two
A drink or three
And people tread
All over you
Oh yes
You are smooth
WE CAN BE SO 'SMOOTH' THAT, AFTER A WHILE, WE EVEN 'SLIP AWAY' FROM OUR OWN SELVES. THIS IS A DYNAMIC WORK THAT TAKES A LOOK AT ONE OF THE MANY COPING 'SKILLS' ONE ACQUIRES BEFORE TAKING A GOOD 'LOOK IN 'HIS' MIRROR'. DONE WELL AND ENJOYED. THANKS FOR SHARING AND BLESSINGS. JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Perhaps even deeper and intense than that secret in those dark eyes. My first thought on reading was, "Wham!" Direct hit for far too many. Good show!
Great introspective and contemplative poem that shows awareness of what goes on with her, Regis.Smooth is beautiful, inside can be a little rough at times...Jerry
Regis,
The gravest injustice we can ever do to our soul is to wither in the driving efforts of self sabotage onto our self to be accepted by another at the self sacrificing of our self. “Do I Have To Give Up Me To Be Loved By You?” It is a façade that requires a lot of negative energy & is completely depleting of the spirits vital life force.
Now on the other hand….when we are being “smooth” to access a love or favor of positive expression, we are pleasing our soul & the heart of another’s soul because we are giving of our self…even though we have hopes of a return that may never happen...but we are real to another, and most importantly to our self

Subtle with a second twist, the use of pills and drink to cover your true self, may make you into what you do not want to be. Nice Write. Warmth and Love to you.
Don't we all do this?
We smooth things out. Smooth sailing. We even want smooth hands.
But when it is smooth as ice we can slip and fall.
Great write.

Excellent. Interestingly, people sometimes become the facade they've made for themselves. I've actually witnessed one man convince himself he was rich - and who thereby became rich.
Smooth has a rough side to it, the struggle, the unheard scream to make one conform. This is a grand poetic psychological (did I miss the OPSHACOM order?) statement.
A smooth carpet, being walked over and using the legal vices to get through the day without screaming too much.
I'm sure this hits home for a lot of folks, including me. Politically correct seems to mean "go along to get along" these days. Although methinks there is a storm brewing lately.
I have known quite a few smoothies in my time, we all have. This is a well thoughtout write Reg, and gives a message to the smoothies that their cover is blown. I guess we all have been smooth a time or two in our lives, but there are people that actually make a living at it. The guy with his smooth ways and charm, that belies his real intentions. The woman who cries just to get her own way...hehe guilty. The child with the pouty lip until mommy gives in. I liked the easy flow of this making it easy to read. Thank you for sharing Reg.
May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those whom you love and who love you, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie
I think you wrote this with naked honesty. Is "smooth" the same as being "plastic" (pretender)? That is what we call it here... it's a tough game to play.
There's "smooth" and then there's ... "smoother!" Dear Regis, you've got a lot of people squirming in their seats ... they too, having used the "smooth" card at some point in their lives ... at different times, and perhaps for many different reasons. Yet, for some folk, the "smooth" state seems to have taken over their lives, and they've withdrawn within. You, my friend, gently and respectfully address this "smooth" topic. Great poem! Exceptionally well done!

This was an AWESOME, truthful write! Some people are demanded to be pleasers, putting everyone before themselves, as they wear a painted on smile, slowly dying inside. HUGS! SC
Regis,
This is a deeply written piece. I feel like your words describe more than the average mask that most of us wear. You seem to be dipping past that and into a more tortured soul - one with no where to turn. I can honestly say I've never turned to a bottle or pills to ease an inner hurt. I guess because I grew up feeling hurt so frequently, thinking inner hurt was normal and there's no reason to chase those feelings away? Who knows. A great, thought provoking poem! Take care of you.
Sheila
Regis, I have to say that I agree with Kate on this. We all show the world that outer face...the face that we want the world to see...it's a form of protection, I think...minus the drugs and drink. But I also understand what you are saying about false people...those that say and do one thing and then stab you when your back is turned. Excellent write, because it provokes a lot of thought.
Regis, this is so very true of so many people. they smile and laugh on the outside and inside they are dying, I really enjoyed this work. You "hit the nail on the head" I aM sorry I havnt been around to comment more. I just got over being very ill. I will be around more now.

?? technique?? method??? Isn't this what EVERYONE does?? The way of the world and all that?? I don't think I lack integrity and people can take me or leave me but yeah... guess being a sunny sort of person, I like to be liked but tough if not. Whether it be as a result of my early conditioning, home environment or upbeat disposition, this pretty much describes me, Darlin...and no, I don't feel abased or put down by it. Tis part of socialisation as far as I'm concerned, rather than a sign of shallowness. Strength to take the higher road and all that. And, to be honest, I get infuriated by peeps who are surly and rude - as if life ain't hard enough sometimes, why add to the garbage? Just thought I'd throw a few Kate spanners in... In fact, I like being smooth... just imagine how I'd be if I was rough!!!!!! Should I hang my head in shame? Nooooooooooooo. OK, that's enough stirrin from me... reckon I've oiled me wheels nicely now. LOLOL Kornerless Kate xx :))))))))))))) xxxx
Regis, I was away all last week, and I'm glad to be back in time
to add my small voice to those who seem to agree it ain't nice to
be smooth, and vice versa. As for me, I try to live by those famous
words of Popeye the Sailor: I yam what i yam and that's all that
I yam. Having said that, Reg, I'm pleased to be reading you again;

Oh, this is good, Regis..it perfectly describes the 'nice' person who wants to blend in and be appreciated. It so takes courage not to be 'smooth'...
You know, this makes me remember a statement by Konrad Adenauer, one of the greatest statesmen of the past century. He said, To be taken seriously, one must first become unpopular.
Yep, Regis, you've taken a peek behind the Human Comedy.
The masks we often have to wear to keep things running SMOOTHLY.
And it's because we're sociable creatures, though we do like a grand upsetter from time to time, a loud mouth to make us smile. In fact, when I see an argument on Youtube, for instance, it's hilarious and foul-mouthed, like the Tin Men movie. Peace is not welcome at all, sang Mr Dylan. Sometimes I think he has a point! And he was never a smooth operator! A rough diamond!
This should not be considered "put down", but "convict". I've been smooth, hanging on a chandelier, intoxicated, wearing my military uniform. Shameful it was.
"Smooth" goes smoothly in the unsmooth interiors of those who smile and nod to cover up their feelings but they are intelligent people, much better than me. Thanks dear Regis. This is a masterpiece
This is very well written, and hits on the truth. I've known people like this, trying to be what everyone wants you to be must be hard to live up to, and causes pain more than happiness.
Sounds a little like me at times, but I fight off the drinking part, I do try to cover up my feelings and go on as if all things are going smoothly. Putting a smile on my face is the only way to get by sometimes I fell like that is the way anyway. Good smoothly written write.
Reg, you fashioned in ink a little piece of persona indigenous to almost every personality -- your analytical skills are quite good -- as for this Sussex man -- what you see is what you get -- good, bad indifferent, like it or dislike it -- a crusty middle-aged chap with a desire to impress no one -- not even myself -- the years of posturing have long ago lapsed -- another creative write from a creative writer -- peace and blessings to you -- JMW

Such truths in this writing. There are those though, who do not want noticed. The ones who sit in the back of the room or stand at the end of the lines. Maybe they have become this way because they have encountered to many, SMOOTH walkers.

Unfortunately, each of us has that "smooth" side or at least moments when we aren't very nice... you've done a very nice job of unpeeling some layers that are not so nice... cruelly deliberate; yet....smoothly done! lindalaw
This poem hits the nail on the head. Some people aren't quick enough to say "no" or check inside themselves to find what they really mean to say or do. Including me, I'm afraid. I pay for it later with depression, obsession over what I should have said or done, anger and Betrayal of Myself. Silent betrayals . . . Thanks, Regis, for showing me I'm not alone being "Smooth."
Reg,
Sadly, what you write in this hard hitting piece is the story of many. Once their shell is cracked their vulnerability is exposed for all to see.
Brilliant write!
Happiness always, Stuart
Reg, I know that I am weird, with an off the walls humor and a childish tendence to needle people, not to the point, you write this piece after looking at my doormat which don't say Welcome but "Oh shit not you again" if you wish I can send you the picture with the old boy beside it.
Smooth? not likely, but we hear you loud and clear.
Nice going!
Regis, I am unsure who you were thinking about when you wrote this, but could you be talking about yourself? I know we have covered this ground before with Lerwyn. I keep trying to imagine who this person is you describe. I'd say there are many insecure people desparate to be accepted and look for approval anywhere they can get it. I liked the part about the facade fading. Even when I am real, I feel I am about to found out. I can understand the frustrations of the person in the poem. Even when we strive to fit in to society and be happy, there is always someone around to burst your bubble. That is why I like it here, because this place is full of "fallen angels" and hypocrites, therefore there is no need for facades. I figured there was room for one more, so I signed up too. --- Rockie
Yep, know this person well and have finally learned how not to fall victim to their pretty lies. Excellent execution, fine offering, Reg.
Take care,
Sherry
I hate to say it, - "I'm never smooth!" - I hate people who just want to be smooth and kiss ass to people so they can be liked. I see this kind of "want to be smooth" people all the time - EVERYWHERE!!! and I hate them!!!
I'm not smooth, and when I don't like something I'll spell it out - whether people will take me for a friend I don't care!!! They can be friend, and if they don't like me for being not smooth it's their problem, they can go kiss some other asses!!!!!
If people want to be my friend then be my friend, but I don't like it when they begin to go around kissing other people asses and be two headed snakes.
