Don't smile at Street Hawkers 5/27/2007 10:52:27 AM
I've done many crazy, impulsive things because unfortunately that's a part of my nature. When it comes to impulse spending, just one of the crazy thing I've bought (other than a pair of miracle mitts) was a set of hand-carved wooden Africa coasters. I didn't need them and I didn't really want them either but I felt sorry for the African man selling them. My daughter chided me at the time saying, "Mom for heaven's sake why do you buy these things?" "Did you see how hungry he looked," I replied sheepishly. "Hmph, he looked very well fed to me Mom" she answered with eyes rolling. "I wasn't talking about his tummy sweetheart. It was a look in his eyes"
"Well, please won't you stop making eye contact with street hawkers. You really can't afford to."
I had to laugh at that as I did when I heard her tell someone later. "My mother smiles at them (street hawkers) and that's why they all gravitate towards us like flies. It makes my job so much harder." - this said with a truly pained sigh.
