Through my life, I've discovered that fantasy and reality exist in two different realms. Now I know this might sound like I'm stating the obvious but think about it.  Children sometimes use fantasy as a means of dealing with reality. In most cases, fantasy is an important part of their reality. As they grow up they learn the distinction between the two. Santa Claus and the Easter bunny are not real and there isn't a tooth fairy that pays out quickly depreciating dollars for old teeth. In spite of this revelation, we continue to fantasize throughout our lives. As we enter into puberty and grow older, we may have  romantic or  sexual fantasies. I've learnt that reality doesn't live up to the fantasy most if not all of the time.  Most young girls fantasize about being swept away by a Prince Charming. Many then fall in love and convince themselves that this is it! He has arrived...tum tum tara! Then they discover that their Prince Charming is really nothing more than a bullfrog in disguise. I'm convinced that this particular fairy story is a twist on reality. I'm quite sure that our Prince also feels somewhat disappointed that his beautiful Princess doesn't live up to his fantasies either. Who would have thought that she would greet him at the door wearing a pink fluffy robe with curlers in her hair and some green goo slapped on her face? What happened to the Victoria's Secret look-alike angel he had envisaged? So as to not be sexist, this scenario could be reversed and she could return home to find him sitting unshaven in front of the 'idiot box' wearing a 'wife beater' shirt and reeking of beer. Or they could both return home, take off their work clothes and get into the clothing they wouldn't be seen out dead in.

So what are fantasies about? If you expect the fulfilment of all your fantasies, boy are you in for a lot of disappointment in life but should you give them up and become a confirmed cynic? No, I don't believe that you should. I believe in dreams but it's important to relegate fantasy to the realm in which it belongs. Continue to fantasize but don't expect reality to line up. It just aint gonna happen folks.
