Ten years have passed... ...
Someone checked out my blogs and asked me why I haven't written one in such a long time. The truth is that I've been focused on other things, among these, building a business which has taken much of my time. AD was a place I frequented when I was going through enormous difficulty. It was cathartic to write when I could make no sense of what was going on around me. It was a way to think out loud. I look back on my poetry now and it's tempting to remove the grand majority of it because it really isn't very good. I decided not to because whether it's good or not is not for me to say. People have such different tastes and while rhymed poetry may not appeal to one it will appeal to another. I have written in both rhymed (structured and unstructured) format and in free verse. I just like to experiment and have fun. Much of it may not be that good.
One of my poems "I Believe in Miracles" would be one such poem but here's the weird thing. I was contacted by someone in North Carolina who told me that both her boys suffered from a serious autoimmune condition and needed bone marrow transplants. Their lives were thrown into turmoil and they were filled with fear and dread. One day while waiting at the hospital, an older lady approached them and gave them something on a sheet of paper. They read it and said that it helped them find peace. The author's name was printed on the bottom but it was a single name, 'Chanti'. I have no idea how they found me but they did and it was to thank me for giving them hope. They asked if they could use the lyrics in a song to raise money for bone marrow drives. I agreed. Apparently, my poem had been doing the rounds in the cancer wards.
The reason I tell this story is not to boast. It's to encourage people to write no matter how they feel about their own writing. I would never have dreamed my words could make a difference to someone out there. How do you know what could happen when you put your words out there? When we share our experiences, we connect with others with shared experiences. And your words may touch someone in a quite an unexpected way. See, I do believe in miracles...
