Nothing is impossible
2/26/2008 1:56:24 PM

~~~
Nothing is impossible...difficult, yes but never impossible.
Now don't go taking that too literally. I don't mean that if you wanted to fly you could leap off a tall building with your arms outstretched and you'd glide safely to the ground if you believed you could. Isn't it strange how people always take things to extremes when trying to make a point? I'm not pointing fingers here. I'm probably the biggest culprit in this arena.
I want to do things, achieve things, experience things and there are times when I've had to concede that I've been unrealistic in my expectations. For example, I won't turn into an Olympic athlete in a couple of weeks by sheer desire alone but there's nothing stopping me from taking steps each day to improve my fitness levels and that's what I'm doing. It's been hard getting out of bed early in the morning and going for a run when I'm tired after a stressful day at work the day before but I have disciplined myself and I am finding it easier each day. Habits are developed over time, not without some dedication and discipline.
I've gone off on a tangent again because I didn't set off to write this blog about my exercise habits. I was thinking about how for years I've been living in hope and trying to make a certain dream a reality. I won't go into what that dream is because that's not important here. What is important is that in spite of the circumstances and against all odds, I can't seem to let go of this particular dream. I've felt despondent at times and had doubts but I keep going because in my heart I believe it is my destiny. The worst thing to contend with has been the doubt of family and friends. At this point they think I'm stark raving mad and I've stopped telling them about my dream because I know I will be faced with cynicism. When I really get down, I remember the words of my first boss who said, "Don't let anyone piss on your dreams unless you throw them in a toilet bowl first." If anyone is going to piss on my dreams it's going to be me and that's something I want to avoid at all costs.
I'm moving towards a particular destination and at times I wonder if I'll be happy when I get there but hey I won't know until I arrive will I? Recently I read something that I'd read a few years before about people in an old age home being asked about what they regretted most in their lives. It was interesting to note that they didn't regret the things they did but rather they regretted the things they didn't do. I have made a lot of mistakes in this loop through life but at least I wasn't afraid to try.
I have a great mentor. He has taught me never to give up. His example inspires me daily..almost as much as it mystifies me. I have at times wondered if he isn't just too damn stubborn to let go but I greatly admire his tenacity and drive anyway. I have some of that drive but I have to learn to stay focussed.
One foot in front of the other...keep marching girl. You'll get there someday...someday....soon.
