Sunshine Always Follows Rain - Even in Boston! 10/14/2020 8:42:37 AM
I have always loved rain and have come to call a rainy day "A Mary's Day," to the point of cancelling everything to stay indoors and cherish every moment - and every drop. It finally rained in Boston yesterday...a well-awaited and much needed event because we've been in a drought pattern and a cause for concern, given the nature of fires. And, although it rained all day, the day seemed mellow and felt rather quiet because most people, unlike me, seem to retreat. I loved it; I can never get enough of it.
Naturally, I feel for those who have to be on the roads or construction workers who may lose a day's pay and say a quiet prayer for all, for I hope to be compassionate while at the same time grateful for a joy so special to me: rain.
I've often wondered how this love for rain developed in me, even as a child. I remember coming home from school and watching rain drops hit the street and sidewalk as people tried to take cover and rush home to safety. I would turn my face up at the sky to feel the drops and even try to drink them in. I would stretch out my hand and try to hold on to rain drops as if they were coins to later be cashed in when needed.
As my brothers and I approached home, I could smell the wonderful cooking emanating from my mother's kitchen... he unmistakable smell of a sumptuous meal put together by a very creative woman who preferred academics to cooking (she was a school principal) but managed to pull it off beautifully. Since we were five(5) kids (four brothers and I), she cooked for an army and we consumed her wonderful efforts like one - especially on a rainy day!
These days I save soup making for rainy or snowy days in Boston to keep the mood of cozy going and, like Mom, much prefer the board room of Yore and its memories to spending time in the kitchen but being a health freak, I do my best, treating food as "fuel" or, like the Chinese, medicine. Living alone and retired, I can afford to do that. I am sure that if I had a family as I once did, I would make every effort to create a wonderful living environment (including cooking!) as I once did. But I don't have to do that now.
So I decided to "celebrate" every moment of "Mary's Day" yesterday by bingeing on Netflix's "Borgen" and stayed in my jammies (after showering!) all day. And evening. I did not even turn on the T.V. for the news: I didn't care. I did not want anything to spoil my day. Even Prime Day at Whole Foods, enticing me to step out and cash in my $10 reward toward my purchase. Nothing tempted me out!
I skipped my long walk, Yoga, exercise and sending out a couple of cards; I didn't care. I even turned in later than usual and had to sleep in to get my beauty's sleep but it didn't matter... I had enjoyed my "Mary's Day," and I'm grateful. Even the phone didn't ring! People get depressed when it rains and they retreat while I come alive.
And now, with the sun shining ever so brightly, it's a new day and I'm a tad behind but no matter. I'll take my loooong walk, come back and stretch, do my Yoga and write a couple of cards. Maybe I'll save the cards for tomorrow... I can just organize my thoughts about them and take the time to meditate and count my blessings for the wonderful gift God gave His Mary yesterday: a holiday!
