Misguided Personal Choices are Killing Us 11/14/2020 10:01:36 AM
Human nature and the selfish choices we make are killing our beloved American brothers and sisters I'm no Albert Schweitzer (sp?) who, reputedly, never killed a living thing, including insects and creepy crawlers, like bugs and spiders. For the longest time I attempted to emulate this gentle man's love of all living creatures until one of his beloved friends, a brown, "violin" spider bit me and nearly took my life and could have left my son motherless.
I made it and I have been grateful, every day, for the miracle, for many people in Los Angeles were not as fortunate and lost not only their limbs to the flesh-eating venom but their lives as well. I recall reading that a single mother of four chose to lose all limbs and basically remain a trunk with her head and mother's heart because she was a mother. And her strong will pulled her through.
The epidemic took place in the summer of 1995, I believe, when ships from South America brought the spiders to the port of Long Beach. You can imagine the rest.
At that time, I was heading the PR/media department for a world-renown hospital in Santa Monica, so I was blessed to have my medical friends and experts give immediate and excellent care, thereby saving my life.
I am now allergic to the venom and detest spiders, no matter what kind. I am sure you understand. My elbow still hurts and my arm has never been the same, but it's nothing to complain about; simply a reminder to be grateful.
So why can't so many people respect the killing power of the Covid virus when its power is in our face and a mask, for starters, gives us a fighting chance?
