Writing and mood 4/17/2006 2:48:27 PM
It's funny how your moods affect your writing, even when you're writing fiction. I find that when I am blue, I cannot help writing with a negative bent. When I am happy, by contrast, I want to rewrite the same passages from a postitive perspective. For example, I first wrote Rain in 2002, during a down spell, and wrote a lot of self-pitying internal dialogue on the part of the heroine, Emily. Rewriting the same scene is a more upbeat time in 2005 and 2006, Emily became more independent and outgoing, and I trashed pages and pages of introspective laments. Now that I'm once again in a negative frame of mind, due to the death of Teacher on the Run, I find I have to closely monitor my writing, lest I let whining creep in to Emily's narration. I haven't really talked to other writers about this, but I imagine it's a universal trend.
