There were no customs in Washington. The flight-attendants, one more lovely than the other, did nothing but pass out presents — everything from calendars to coasters, from greeting cards or playing cards, from beakers to shot glasses, all with the BOAC and Air France’s Aerospatiale logos imbossed And there were no customs, no forms to fill out for the IRS or anyone else.
No nothing, much to the delight of my seatmate, Payne Stewart, who had just played Royal St. George’s and won the British Open with a final round 63, beating his two opponents, Tony Jacklin and Phil Michelson, with a 75-foot putt on the last playoff hole with a birdie to their pars.
He was wearing a normal business suit rather than his standard wardrobe of ivy caps and flamboyant pants, a cross between the plus-fours and the knickerbockers that were the style before Stewart attempted to revive it. I barely recognized him.
I told him, after my third Scotch and soda, about beating Elvis Presley out of his solid gold-colored golf bag.
“Really? And you had to shoot 107 to do it?”
“Sure. Wanna buy it?”
“How much?”
“Six grand, including clubs, balls, tees — everything in the pockets.”
It’s still for sale. What Payne Stewart never knew: first fifty bucks would’ve taken it!
If I may change the subject for a moment, I have heard that the NCAA will reinstate Todd Gurlie, lll, provided Mark Richt donate his full salary to the cause and add it to the grand-prize winner’s amount to be won by the winner of the millionaire’s prize of an additional million won the night of Friday, November 4, 2014. That will guarantee Gurley’s eligibility for the crucial game between the UGA team and Florida St. at the Swamp.
Mark Richt’s boss, the Athletic Director, went so far as to double Richt’s salary for the 2014-15 seasons to make the swap more palatable, much to his boss’s dismay, UGA’s new president.
(Sarah Palin was heard to say, when this was announced on CBS-TV, “What a grand thing to do! If this don’t spring Tad Gurnsey, the llll, I don’t know what will. I don’t know what’s louder than cold, hard cash!”)
Like Sarah and Mark, I even donated my initials: ”BM” (in case it was too embarrassing to the NCAA, they can call themselves the BMAA and no one would be the wiser. This could also, as far as I cared, be carried over to the NFL as well to become the BMFL, and the BMAC and the BMFC.)
