Oops, did I forget to capitalize that! 7/2/2007 8:32:43 PM
Calling all grammer books. Just last night I was sitting on my couch reading my college grammer book. I do this often, many writers do. A few months ago I was convinced to change all the pronouns in my book, that were generic,from capitalized to uncapitalized. Words such as, may father, papa, sister and aunt. The words were being used as title, therefore I felt they to be capitalized.
Sitting down in frustaion, I corrected a 48,0000 word manuscript. Feeling somewhat conflicted, I sent the manuscript out to some agents. For months I have gone back and forth ove rthis issue. Every time I wrote, placing the pronoun in an-un-capitalized form, I felt uncomforatable. Late last night this came back to haunt me.
I own two, not one, college grammer books. I read them often. While reading the the chapter covering nouns, I discovered a huge error...
When writing about a specific propernoun, a noun with title, that proper noun must be capitalized. "Yes, I was right. No, I must make changes", my heart muttered to it self. How could I have forgot that one little rule? what could I do different.
I have spent the whole day, or a large portion of it, correcting a second guess. I realize I have grammer and spelling issues. Let the editors cry foul! As a writer, I am by very deffinition a story teller. We are allowed to make these mistakes. Okay, maybe not. Only published authors get such forgiveness. We, the often and many must not make mistakes. If such a blunder reach the cornea of an editor, it can be our death.
Liying back on my couch terror entered in. I had sent that very manuscript out to thirty plus agents. Ugh, stake through my heart, or my LCD screen. COuld this slight error lead to denial by "CAPS"? I certainly hope not. Furhter, I deeply appologize to any unfortunate editor, agent who may have read, and been disgusted over such a sin.
As for the rest, "remember, remember, grammer books, my friend".
