Another Crime and More Incompetence 8/20/2007 1:07:29 AM
A Weekend in South Africa Sunday afternoon saw me at the office surrounded by armed police and security guards. Four businesses in one complex robbed by nine persons in two vehicles.
They lifted the electric gates off their mountings, ignored the electric fence, destroyed the main steel security gate and kicked in the door. In and out in eight minutes with all the PCs they could carry.
I guess the fortunate thing is that no one was shot or raped or beaten, as is all too often the case here in SA, where every year hundreds of police and security personnel are murdered doing their duty for the public ( and for bugger all reward at that).
In another incident, one of our notorious taxis caused an accident in which 22 persons burned to death - by the end of the year I guess we'll have the usual thousands of road deaths.
I love this country, but it can be so trying at times. If you come here for the world cup, better hire a gun at the airport, although the government is promising to provide special protection for tourists - they're scared shitless that crime will deter visitors (which it does already).
But what a country! I recently visited Hermanus on the Cape coast for a close encounter with Southern Right whales - fantastic, as were the wine farms. After almost twenty years, I wouldn't live anywhere else, but CRIME is a plague of biblical proportions here - often all too violent.
Anyway, I eagerly await the Odyssey review for The Aquarius Key, A Novel of the Occult - hope they like it as sales are excruciatingly slow and I need all the kudos I can get.
I almost forgot the incompetence bit - had a technician booked for the Congo on an SAA flight - just the visa cost around a thousand US$. WHat happens? SAA overbook the flight and won't let him on - how do they think business functions? I shall avoid SAA whenever possible.
