As a South African, and like so many other Africans (and Canadians and Brits of my acquaintance),I'm hoping like crazy that the US doesn't fall for the lies of Billary. Here's a few thoughts from someone on the outside... Billary strikes me as the epitome of all that's gone wrong with the America: the America that the world not only loved, but loved to love, and respected as we respected no other nation.
In my youth, in the UK and elsewhere in the world, America was the nation we generally admired: the nation of hope; the nation that took humanity to the moon and back; the nation that held the line against the USSR; the nation whose president had the guts to stand up and say 'Ich Bin ein Berliner'. Whilst we deplored the more egregious mistakes, we rarely doubted the sound inner moral strength and courage of the US. And how could we after WW2, during which the US spent so much of the precious blood of its youth in defence of Europe?
Sure, we made many jokes over 'Loud Yanks', caricatured their 'bigger in America' ways, and occasionally deplored their support of tyrants. But Americans were our favourite (if slightly disreputable) cousins, and we respected, even loved America for its big hearted, larger than life exuberance.
So tracking the ethical breakdown of the US during the reign of Bush and the neo-cons has been a profound shock. Even Bill's lapses pale in comparison. So now the US has its first chance at regeneration in a generation - a clean sweep - and what do we find...? Billary the twin headed caricature of all that dragged the US into its current moral quagmire playing the age old games of realpolitik as America burns.
I've tracked closely the lies, the deceptions, the utter contempt for American intelligence that Billary displays and arrived at what I am pleased to think of as a suitable epithet:
THE TWO HEADED BEAST OF POLITICAL WHOREDOM
There is nothing the two headed beast will not do, no person it will not malign, no cause too sacred to be trampled into the dust, in its raging pursuit for power.
Like so many of the world's citizens outside the US (and maybe more so than most, being 50), I want the USA back in the world's community of nations, back at the heart of the world's conscience, a power for good to whom we look up, a superpower we can trust and respect.
And a liar cannot achieve that.
A two headed beast braying lies in its desperate quest for power will never lift the US from its current position of global ignominy.
Second only to George Bush in my long memory, Billary is the single most disgraceful liar to emerge from US politics in a generation.
If you don't see it in your hearts, your souls and your consciousness to elect Obama, then please elect McCain: he seems a decent man with a decent record.
