South African finance minister expresses ire at skilled emigration...
Today, the South African finance minister expressed his ire at the levels of skilled emigration from the developing world to the developed world. So far so good...
Underlying his statements was an easily detected undercurrent of unease at the mere fact that the skilled, mainly what we would term 'knowledge workers' in today's society have a greater freedom than ever before to work wherever the hell they wish to.
Like all politicians, Manuel likes to be in control - control of people. What really alarms him is that times have changed so much with the advent of technology, that for the first time, individuals have the power to choose domicile of choice - physical or cyber based, from which to exercise their affairs. This includes of course, their tax affairs.
The balance of power is at last shifting in favour of the sovereign individual. Like most (all?) politicians, with instincts of tyranny so finely honed, Manuel now aims for international agreements on skills migration - i.e keeping the power to dictate to us where we can live and work.
This is much in accordance with the bullying of small nations with low taxation rates by the western bully-boy nations who dip their hands into our pockets and steal from us every month (income tax).
Tough luck Trevor - the collectivist age is dying on its feet - the days when you could bleed the hard working middle classes dry and preen over successful redistribution are very close to an end.
One day soon, governments will have to admit loss of control not only over our physical mobility, but over our cyberspace mobility - we'll live and work and be remunerated in ways you haven't yet dreamed of, and the whole rotten political system of the tyranny of the masses will come tumbling down.
Soon, every country will be compelled to offer tax breaks and holidays to skilled individuals just to attract them in AT ALL.
Skills are mobile. Government is dying. Long live the individual. Long live freedom...
