How I wish there was a God! 2/20/2008 9:28:50 PM
The beauty of the universe and a blessed life inspires an urge to say 'thank you'!
Last night,as I basked in the warm water of my swimming pool under the crepuscular argent gaze of Orion, the moon rose between the trees at the periphery of my garden.
In the house, my lovely wife tapped away at our PC, our dogs at her feet, doubtless gazing at her with that protective love for which we adore them.
For an endless moment, my mind drifted back to my humble beginnings in Wales, where so many of my family died of despair. Yes, I've done well, and life has been good to me. I have a superb job, a gorgeous wife, I travel globally and despite a lifetime of stupendous drinking and smoking, I'm in great health (if not shape!) at 50.
Dammit! At that moment, I so wished there was a God to which I could offer thanks for all of this. But as I gazed into fifteen billion years of space-time, the only response to my heartfelt prayer of thanks was the eternal silence of the void. And so it always will be, I guess. After all, people who 'hear voices' tend to have a somewhat tenuous grasp of reality! To be honest with ourselves when such need surges within us is a tough task that requires enormous discipline.
You see, we are the product of this magnificent edifice we call the universe, a sentient expression of its beauty. But of a creator there is no evidence, no footprint, no relic. Everything just seems to 'be'.
Ah well! I guess I'll go on breathing my futile thanks into the void, wishing things were different...
Anyway, I'm off to Brazil today, thence Australia via Los Angeles and Fiji. Life's great!
