Perceptions of the United States
Personally, I love the USA and most (not all) of its people. There's an unofortunate trend in the world today to judge people collectively as a consequence of their government's behaviour, their religion or whatever. Sadly, the American people (rather than their government) take a lot of flak for the world's ills.
Nevertheless, I was quite taken with a newspaper comic satirical sketch I saw the other day. I can't legally copy it here so I'll describe it:
The latest US Martian Lander is approaching the surface of the red planet, beginning its all important search for evidence of water.
Peeping out from under a rock are two small martians, one of whom says:
"Don't worry about water...if they find oil we're totally f***ed!"
It's funny, but it also says a good deal about the way the US is widely perceived in South Africa today.
